Here’s proof-positive that Prezi, animations, and bullet points do nothing to enhance your presentations…
How to define good slide design?
One word… Impact.
John Oliver shows us how to do it every week on HBO’s Last Week Tonight.
We usually don’t associate TV shows with PowerPoint, but we should. We can learn valuable lessons about how slides can best be used.
John Oliver’s “slides” appear to his right as he delivers his weekly monologue.
Let’s first look at what his slides don’t have:
- No bullet points
- No animated elements
- No fade-ins or fade-outs
- No Prezi
Here’s what his slides do have:
- White space
- One central idea/purpose
Watch an episode of Last Week Tonight and consider how you can work impactful slides into your next presentation:
Note: I get it…your boss is different and demands all the information in your slides so the audience can take them away as handouts. Why not separate the slides and handouts instead of them being the same thing… Otherwise there’s not much point in doing your presentation- just email everyone your slides and they can read them at their leisure.
